Australian Images Photography :: Costa Living in NSW- Fair wages for Firefighters ::

The Costa living in New South Wales:

Shafting firefighters while pocketing handy $13,400 pay increase, the NSW Treasurer should be ashamed of himself.

You'd think that after giving themselves a generous pay increase of 6.7% (on top of 7% a year earlier), NSW politicians would feel a little embarrassed offering professional firefighters a pitiful 2.5% per year wage rise, especially when inflation is running at over 4%. But one should never underestimate the ability of politicians to look after their own sky-rocketing pay packets while calling for restraint from everybody else.

NSW Treasurer Michael Costa and embattled premier Morris Iemma are refusing to grant firefighters any increase of more than 2.5% without 'wage related cost savings'. Of course, no such prerequisite was made of them to receive their 6.7% increase or indeed any previous increase. Last year, treasurer Michael Costa's base salary increased by a massive $13,400 to more than $244,000 per year!

So while receiving an extra thirteen thousand dollars himself, Mr Costa is offering firefighters a pay rise of less than 1/10th of that amount. This is nothing short of a disgusting example of political hypocrisy, and it's well past time that politicians were called upon to justify their outrageous wage increases, just as they expect of all other employees.

New South Wales firefighters are being told that to get anything over 2.5% they must show wage cost reductions through productivity increases. Unfortunately, there's not much a firefighter can do to increase productivity. Should they drive faster to fires? Or perhaps extinguish the fires more quickly?

Even if such ridiculous suggestions were achievable, it wouldn't meet Mr Costa's criteria of 'wage related cost savings' anyway. Indeed, firefighters now perform considerably more work than ever before, constantly being required to learn expanded roles and operate complex new equipment designed to save lives and reduce property damage. But because none of this new work results in "wage related cost savings", the government offers zero wage increases for any of this new work. It doesn't matter how many additional lives are saved, how many injuries are eliminated or how much property is preserved. Apparently, the only thing that matters is 'wage related cost savings.

If this wage stinginess isn't bad enough, on page 13 of it's submission to the Industrial Relations Commission last week, the NSW Government threatens to close fire stations to save money if the IRC grants firefighters wage increases in excess of 2.5%! Yep, you're reading that correctly. However, since their submission hit the papers the Government have been quick to deny any stations will permanently close, which begs the question: Why put it in the submission if you don't really mean it?

What such closures (Be they permanent or temporary) means to Joe Public, is that instead of the nearest fire engine being 3 or 4 minutes away, it may be 10 or 15 minutes away. And when your house is on fire, an extra 10 minutes could easily be the difference between life and death. The difference between your life and death. Never in the 124-year history of the NSW Fire Brigades has a government threatened public safety in this way. Firefighters, understandably, are livid that the government is clearly threatening public safety to save a few dollars.

I encourage all NSW residents to contact their local member and demand a fair deal for firefighters and other emergency workers in NSW, and to immediately affirm that no fire station will be permanently or temporarily closed to save a dollar. You can also email Michael Costa, Morris Iemma and send an email of support to NSW Firefighters.

I'll end this piece with a four simple, direct questions for Michael Costa. I've emailed these questions to him, but I'm not holding my breath for a direct reply. If I get one, I'll be sure to post it.

Dear Mr Costa,

  • Can you please advise what (if any) "employee related cost savings" were made by you to achieve your recent 6.7% pay increase?
  • If you made no offsets to achieve your 6.7%, then why do you demand this of firefighters?
  • Would you support a change that would see politicians' wage increases tied to those of other public servants? If not, please explain why you would not support this proposal.
  • Are you prepared to guarantee that no fire station will be temporarily or permanently closed rather than bring in a relieving firefighter or one on overtime?

Sack NSW Labor
The sooner we dump this tired government the better. Federal labor refused to take a payrise last year. But the moneygrubbing, money wasting NSW government not only put their hand up for 6.7%, they now tell the public servants that actually deserve it that they can't afford more than 2.5%.
Goodbye Iemma, Costa and Co. Your loss at the nest election will be not only caused by your general incompetence, but by your treatment of those workers in our community who most deserve decent pay.

Peg Costa's pay to public servants
It's not just the firefighters. Police and Ambos will soon have to face up to this weasel's 'real wage' cuts. I can't believe he won't even give them a rise to match inflation, while he's sitting pretty on $250k.

Give them a fair deal
I support firefighters getting a good pay rise. I haven't seen Michael Costa running into too many burning buildings lately!

Costa's fire fighting alright
To Belinda from Sydney.....

Costa hasn't got time to run into burning buildings. He's too busy putting out the fires surrounding him! How did that horrible little man ever get elected?

Closing fire stations?
I have heard that they government want to close stations for the rest of a shift if they are short. That's why they are only saying that they won't close any station *permanently*. What a copout. What happens if someone dies while the station is temporarily closed? Costa is a slimy little worm who couldn't care less, especially since he already has a job lined up with the NAB after the next election.

Who's house is on fire?
How well will the lovely minister feel when he closes the station and it is his house on fire - no,wait: he won't put himself at jeopardy, it is easier to do it to those that don't earn a neat quarter million a year. And then he gets to look like a hero for offering to help in bad times....

pollies dishonest
Typical - Politicians start their career "for the people" then somehow change to "for themselves". All community workers should be paid more - we can't afford to lose our houses or the land.

THEY DESERVE SO MUCH MORE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I cannot understand how our government expects these HERO men and women to put their lives on the line everytime they fight a fire, and not pay them what they deserve. I have a 7 year old son who has wanted to be a firefighter ever since he could talk and since he met my friends husband who is a firefighter also. Living in Penrith we get a lot of fires in the summer and over the past 5 years i have lived here i cannot count the amount of times numerous houses have been saved and lives saved by our firefighters. Do we see our government bodies putting their lives at risk everyday, do they kiss their families goodbye every day wondering if this will be their last day, do their partners and children wonder if they are going to come home or are they going to get the phone call? I think not! A pay rise is not asking for much considering what they do for us everyday of the week! Being a single mum with 5 young children, i pray to God my house never catches fire and especially if there are less firehouses around. WHO WILL SAVE MY HOUSE AND MY FAMILY??????????????????????

Costa - Did you let that child die in a house fire
Michael Costa

Under your plans along with your mate Nathan Rees you want to close fire stations temporarily when a fire fighter is on leave to save a max $440 a station per shift - station closed!!!!!

Who is going to put the fire out? The nearest station could be 15-20 minutes away. Costa and Rees - is it your negligance that cost that little child its life because you proposed the closure of fire stations??

I hope this never happens but all fire fighters will point the finger at you Costa!!

COSTA IT BETTER NOT BE MY FAMILY!!!!

Micheal Costa is a pimple on the arse that is the Iemma Government.

They deserve what Costa got
I can't believe Costa can give himself 6.7%, then tell fire fighters that they can only have 2.5%. And then to have the nerve to abuse and belittle fire fighters for demanding a decent wage rise. What a self-serving piece of trash.
#11 - Simon - 08/26/2008 - 08:01
Who's the clown?
Costa has called firefighters clowns and declared their pay and conditions are a rort. If your local MP supports this view, get stuck into them! A truly disgraceful petty little man.

Costa loses again
Looks like the little bald loser is about to lose once again. He and Iemma's plan to sell off our vital power infrastructure looks like being blocked by some rebel labor MPs. Good on them, and may pathetic little costa get the flick from his cushy $240k job. Can't happen soon eneough. What a disgusting, out of touch, self-serving little weed he is.

One Miiiiiillllion Dollars...
Today's telegraph has a great cartoon of Costa as Dr Evil sucking his little finger.

I can just see the bald little moron campaigning for the next Pollie's payrise...

IRC: "And, Mr Costa, what would you like your salary to be next year, assuming you still have a job?"

Costa: "One miiiillllion dollars"

Do you really get monkeys?
I have heard many time the saying " if you pay peanuts, you get monkeys" when people talk about the astonishing amount of money that politicians are paid. But I beg to differ, because to me it would seem that if you pay peanuts, you actually get people who care about their jobs. Just like the NSW fire fighters. And i have also heard politicians say more times than i care to recall that the average wage is "quite reasonable" and "enough to live on". So if this is so reasonable..... how come the pollies get paid soooooooo much more. If its enough to live on, why dont the pollies live on it..... its time that the monkeys in parliament pulled their heads out of the clouds and paid the emergency service workers what they are worth.

Fire stations closed
I guess this pathetic government followed through on their threat to close fire stations to save a few bucks?

My closest fire station at Riverstone is now closed most day-shifts, because the government won't pay overtime to staff it. The next nearest station at Schofields is 10 minutes away, and if they are out, the next nearest is 20 minutes away.

So if my house catches fire during the day, with Riverstone and Schofields stations unavailable, it will be at least 20 minutes until the first fire engine arrives.

What a pathetic, disgusting way to save a dollar. And the premier says that noone will be put at risk by these closures. Perhaps he could release the statistics on the chance of saving life and property when you arrive 20 minues after the fire starts. I'd be guessing ZERO.

Goodbye Mr Rees.

VIC no better than NSW on Emergency Service Workers' pay.
I'm an Intensive Care Paramedic in Vic and can only support most of the comments and thrust of the article above. We recently fought our EBA and the disgraceful tactics used by governments to shaft emergency service workers is nothing short of appalling. They stall, send representatives to meetings who have no power to actually negotiate, covertly infiltrate union meetings and gatherings, lie about current conditions and pay and generally treat us with complete and utter contempt, all the time whilst their 'spin' machine makes us look like the bad guys.

I guarantee that even if they do give you a measly 2.5%, you will loose other elements of your current entitlements by stealth....we did. Time to vote the lousy mongrels OUT.
